Aging well with adaptogens

Aging well is something we all want to do.  Figuring out how to accomplish this, however, can seem challenging at times - right?

Many years ago as I was studying to become a certified Ayurvedic consultant, I was strongly pulled to learn all I could about Ayurvedic adaptogens in order to help people look and feel their best as they age - to stay active and agile along the way -  with sharp, clear minds, and energetic bodies.

The over-arching goal of these powerful foods from plants, herbs and mushrooms is a solid focus and action on PREVENTION, and doing all we can along the way to live our healthiest BEFORE the only resort is to deal with an injury or chronic illness.

In order to age well, our bodies repair, detox and self-restoration mechanisms must have rest and relaxation.  It's easy to see that if you're constantly under stress and in 'fight-or-flight' mode your body is not able to do this important repair work, which ultimately leads to a whole host of things, including accelerated aging.

Adaptogenic plants help our bodies manage and deal with the effects of stress in all forms - mental, psychological and physical.  They can help normalize the body's functions in the face of stress and gently restore homeostasis.

Of course, before you try anything - consult with your doctor - especially if you're currently under care or taking medications.

And, if you do choose to dip your toes into the water and explore adding adaptogens in your daily routine to age well, below are some of my favorites to help to mitigate the damaging effects of stress and premature aging:

1. Triphala - of of the most common Ayurvedic rasayana (rejuvenating) herbs.  It's actually a combination of three berries native to the Indian continent: bibhitaki, amla, and haritaki, with a long history of use in preventing disease and treating excessive dryness, constipation, and inflammation (all commonly seen in many aging populations).

2. Ashwagandha - high in antioxidants, Ayurveda uses this powerful herb to aid depression, mitigate the effects of stress and provides antioxidants.

3. Holy basil - known to increase the moisture in the skin balance insulin and support the cardiovascular system.

Here's to aging well, and to curating a gorgeous live well lived!
